Vacuum Water Absorption - ASTM D1056
The percent increase in weight of a closed cell foam material after exposure to water under specified conditions.
This test provides an indirect measurement of cell structure and closed cell content of a specimen.
Testing is performed by submerging a specimen in water in a pressure vessel and lowering the air pressure to 2.5 psi absolute for 3 minutes. The vacuum is then removed and the specimen is allowed to rest for another 3 minutes before being removed from the water, blotted dry, and weighed.
Water absorption is calculated using:
W = [(A-B)/B] x 100
where:
W = Change in mass, %
A = Final mass
B = Initial mass
